About the Character Counter
Counts characters (with and without spaces), words, sentences, lines, and paragraphs live as you type, plus an estimated reading time at 200 words per minute. Frequently asked questions
- Does the counter include spaces?
- Both numbers are shown. The main character count includes spaces; a separate count excludes all whitespace, which is the number some platforms enforce.
- How is a word counted?
- A word is any run of non-whitespace characters, so hyphenated terms count as one word and numbers count as words.
- How is reading time calculated?
- Word count divided by 200 words per minute, a common average for silent reading of ordinary prose. It is an estimate, not a measurement.
- Is there a character limit on the input?
- No. The only constraint is your browser's memory, since nothing is uploaded.
